Drew Brees Retirement – Brees Almost Hits Outer Space
Drew Brees announced his retirement from the NFL and New Orleans Saints today. In my opinion, Drew Brees is one of the best QBs of all-time. Let’s take a look at his career from a stats perspective and some comparisons to his accomplishments.
Marketing software for the difference makers
You might be thinking why does a marketing software company care about Drew Brees and his retirement!? Great question. There are several reasons.
1) Our software is the #1 Marketing Platform® for small businesses. Drew Brees was one of the top performers in his profession, and we both are making a difference.
2) We support small business owners, and Brees and his wife are local entrepreneurs.
With that being, said let’s take a look at some stats:
Difference maker — 5 cool stats
Outer space – Brees almost had enough total passing yards to reach outer space. His 80,000 career passing yards convert to more than 241,074 feet and 45.6 miles. Wow, that is a lot! To put that into perspective, from the earth to outer space, it is 330,000 feet. Looking at the numbers, Brees was more than 80% to space, if you stacked every yard ever passed on top of each other. The guy put together a great career.
Passed the mountain tops – Mount Everest was nothing for Brees. Brees’s total passing yards was almost more than the top-1o highest mountains on earth. This list includes Mount Everest, K2, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu, Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, Nange Parbat and Annapurna. Added all up, they collectively total more than 274,219 feet.
Brees is an outlier– Brees had over 10,000 passing attempts and spent countless hours perfecting his craft. The 10,000 passing attempts stood out to me as I wrote about the 10,000-hour rule theory in a previous post. I thought the comparison of passing attempts to hours was too significant not to mention. He successfully completed almost 70% of his pass attempts. Imagine being right on target 70% of the time.
Brees is a winner – With over 170 career wins, Brees is one of the most successful players of all time when it comes to winning. Brees had a winning record for 13 years and reached the top by winning a Super Bowl in 2009. A cool side note: 2009 was a great year for Madwire. It was the year that we founded the business and set out on a journey to build one of the best marketing platforms on the planet.
Passer rating was off the charts – Brees had a career passer rating of 101.5 with the New Orleans Saints. The perfect QB rating is 158.3. When stacked up with the other greats, he holds his own with regards to all-time passer ratings. This formula for calculating passer rating is below. Source
The four separate calculations can be expressed in the following equations:where
ATT = Number of passing attempts
COMP = Number of completions
YDS = Passing yards
TD = Touchdown passes
INT = Interceptions
If the result of any calculation is greater than 2.375, it is set to 2.375. If the result is a negative number, it is set to zero.
Then, the above calculations are used to complete the passer rating:
