1) It may seem obvious at this point, but updating your point of sale system to be EMV (chip card) compliant is a must. Businesses that are still using old technology are at much greater risk of being targeted. The encryption methods used with a chip card are safer and customers are now beginning to expect this kind of security.
2) Train your employees to ask for identification from customers they don’t recognize. Especially for larger purchases. In addition, provide training to help them identify suspicious behavior. For example, if someone who doesn’t seem to fit your typical customer profile comes in and makes a large purchase of many items without browsing much, they could have other motives for those purchases. Ask for identification and engage with them while they are shopping. Studies show that interacting with customers is the best way to prevent fraud.
3) Learn to recognize built-in security features on card. Most credit and debit cards have a hologram that changes color in the light, a magnetic stripe, a signature panel and a number printed or embossed on the front. If the card looks suspicious in any way, simply call the customer service line printed on the back of the card to verify its validity.
