People who are happy are more fun to be around, in personal and professional settings. Not only are happy people generally more pleasant, they are also more productive in the workplace. A lot of people don’t find happiness at work, but your employees don’t have to fall into that category. We’ve come up with 5 simple ways to foster happiness and employee satisfaction at your workplace.
Promote Good Health at Work
Make it easy for your employees to be healthy at work. This means offering regular break times, sharing the importance of healthy eating, or starting an exercise group for employees to participate in before or after work hours. Encourage walking meetings and provide standing desks to those who want them. When people feel good they are able to fulfill their potential and be the best version of themselves.
Provide Opportunities for Growth/Development
Incentivize employees to take risks and be creative in their roles. If feedback is limited to criticism or calling out mistakes made then it’s difficult to be happy. When employees feel appreciated and acknowledged for their efforts, and when they are rewarded for taking chances and growing, they will be happier!
Create a sense of Community
As much as you can, facilitate communication and community among your employees. This could look as simple as checking in every morning as a team and allowing people to share how they’re doing. Or, you can take it a step further by organizing post-work social events to encourage interaction among employees. Creating a community is critical to fostering an environment in which employees can feel relaxed, at home, and happy.
Use Time Wisely
Meetings have a time and a place in every business. Sometimes it is necessary to have them to get everyone on the same page and share important information. However, as we all know, meetings are sometimes mishandled and over utilized. Value your employees’ time by being efficient with your meetings. Keep them short and to the point, and show your employees that you care about their time. This will create a sense of trust and respect between you and your employees.
Give Employees Autonomy
When possible and appropriate, give your employees responsibility and autonomy in their jobs. This could mean allowing employees to control their own schedules. Perhaps an employee has wanted to try something new in his or her role in your business: have a conversation and give him or her flexibility to try things out and explore. Giving people space to be creative and do what they think works best for them will not only increase their happiness, but it will also likely produce better and more interesting results than you ever could have planned yourself!
