After you complete a draft, leave it for awhile (at least 10 minutes).
When you come back to edit, read the text out loud. Use a normal speaking pace, with clear enunciation.
Whenever your pace breaks (you stumble over words, get confused, repeat yourself) it’s an indication you’re too wordy. Cut unnecessary words so you can read smoothly without losing meaning.
You’ll be amazed at the clarity and fluidity you’ll gain.
Other tips:
Use contractions.
Avoid stilted, jargon laced writing. Use a natural, conversational voice.
Write for a general audience at about a 5th grade reading level. You’ll achieve this if you write more like you talk.
Don’t skip reading aloud in a normal speaking voice. Many problems with wordiness and style are only revealed when read out loud. Find a private place, join a friend, and read like you’re giving a speech.
When you can read your writing out loud with a smooth cadence and no confusion, it will be a clear, concise read for your audience.
