A Breakdown of Demographics for Each Social Media Platform

There are quite a few social media platforms that are visited by millions of people each day. If you are looking to market your business on social media, it’s important to understand your audience.
Here is a quick breakdown of the demographics for some of the most popular social media platforms and how to best market to them.
Currently, most users on Instagram are male (though females are close in numbers) ages 18 to 44. Instagram is also very popular with teens and ranks as the third most preferred social network amongst US teens (behind Snapchat and TikTok). This platform is shifting to become an e-commerce hub and is a great place to market to people in their 20s or 30s.
TikTok
The largest age group on TikTok lands between 10 to 19 years old, though many other people are on it and its reach continues to grow. The user base is 61% female, and around 40% of its Gen Z users say their purchases are directly influenced by TikTok. This is a great platform to reach younger audiences (teens and lower 20s) looking for what’s ‘in.’
Think of Twitter as ‘Old Reliable,’ not much changes from year to year. The age demographics have gone down over the past few years, with most users being between 18 to 29 years old, though males remain the largest users of the platform.
An important thing to note about Twitter is that the majority of its users are college-educated and make over $75K a year. It can be difficult to advertise on Twitter, but when something lands, users are quick to engage.
The COVID-19 pandemic helped to skyrocket the user base of LinkedIn, and the platform currently hosts 810 million monthly active users. The largest age group lands between 25 to 34 years old, and males and females tend to make up similar percentages of the users.
Millennials now dominate this platform, and younger generations are getting involved as well. This platform is a great place to find motivated audiences to market to.
The demographic on Pinterest is very unique as the user base is split into a near three-way tie, meaning that 18 to 29-year-olds, 30 to 49-year-olds, and 50 to 64-year-olds share this unique platform. The users of this platform use it for both aesthetics and to research products.
An important note on Pinterest is that nearly half of its users have a household income of $100K or more a year! Pinterest is a product-focused platform and is a great place to show off your products to millions of customers.
YouTube
The spirit of the Wild West is alive and well on YouTube as the platform continues to grow, gain younger audiences, push for longer video times and prove itself as a great place to advertise. The most common age of a user lands between 15 to 35 years old, and the platform is made up of mostly men (though many women use YouTube).
An important thing to keep in mind about YouTube is that 62% of its users log in for at lear 30 minutes a day, making it a great place for advertisements to be seen.
Though the user growth rate has nearly halted, and controversies abound, Facebook remains the largest social platform. The average age group is between 25 and 34 years old, and the majority of Facebook’s users are male. While younger audiences are moving to different platforms, Facebook remains the ideal place to market to people in their late 20s to late 30s.
An important note on Facebook is that around 90% of its daily users are from outside the US and Canada, making it a great place to market to an international audience.
